It’s no secret that all Nintendo needs to do to sell a game is put Mario’s mug on it. And, generally speaking, most of the games he headlines are pretty good. But one area in which the mustachioed megastar hasn’t always shone is sports games. Compared to his platforming, racing, and role-playing adventures, games like Mario Sports Mix, Super Mario Strikers,
Mario Super Sluggers, and later entries in the Mario Golf series felt shallow, short, and unsatisfying.
Mario Tennis Aces for Nintendo Switch, however, could mark the beginning of a change of tack for the plumber’s sporting escapades.
Rather than simply providing players a light, cartoonish simulation, as Nintendo’s sports game partner Camelot Software Planning has done so often in the past, the designers have created a full-on campaign, complete with character growth, leveling, boss fights, puzzles, and exploration. And, a bit amazingly, all of these activities still manage to keep basic tennis mechanics at their core.
